“Adults only?” – we qualify. Our last day as temporary Cretans

Terri likes to let me make most of the travel arrangements, usually. I enjoy surprising her with unique, fancy or rustic places to stay, sometimes in town and other times in the “sticks.”

I found a good deal on an “adults only” spa-resort on the north coast, why not-what could go wrong…..

Once I had told Terri about the descriptor, we tried to imagine what all that might mean. Not much really, granted, there were no young kids running around and there might have been a disproportionate number of newly weds, young couples and older couples. Missing was the middle-aged parents with kids in tow……dah! And we missed that! Having kids around can be sometimes loud but they also bring energy, activity, smiles and laughter. So, as nice as it was, probably no more “adults only” for us.

As our kids and grandkids can attest, Terri is an avid beach glass huntress. So when we see a nice beach and have the time, it’s beach glass hunting season.

Deserted, slightly rocky and windward facing beaches are the best for beach glass hunting and this one did not disappoint. I found the required 3 pieces but the hunting was so good Terri made me continue the search.
Beautiful beach on the way to Heraklion, Crete

We checked into a big-city hotel in the largest city in Crete, Heraklion. The best thing about the hotel was its location on the edge of the walled city, close to everything we like.

Our room wasn’t ready so we headed out to explore the city. There were endless narrow pedestrian-only streets with countless shops and tavernas. We eventually found our way to the port and the old fortress that we wanted to see.

Cannon balls or ballast stones, both?

I found a local Greek street food restaurant for dinner. We decided to each have the half portion of gyros and share a liter of white wine. After a lot of pointing at the menu and each other, confused expressions on the waitress’s face, we had our order completed. But the food portions were enormous so we were convinced that we had not made our order clear. But in the end, we had. We just didn’t anticipate so much food, we should have split the half order! Neither one of us finished our dinner. We did finish the liter of wine though.

Two half orders of gyros and a liter of white wine, 22euros.

Tomorrow begins a new adventure, 9 nights on the Voyager of the Seas

  1. Glad you got your required 3 pieces of glass Matt…. she’s very strict on that issue!!

We have never tried the adult only places yet ( You’re SURE you qualify?) but we agree, kids around make it more fun and enjoyable to watch. Adults can be boring…..LOL
