While Hvar island is known for its vibrant city, parties and nightlife; Mljet is just the opposite. It is a sleepy island with no cities, only small villages that find themselves crammed into the small coves of the island.
There is no airport and most visitors and locals, (except the yachting crowd), get back and forth from the mainland as we did: the ferry. In high season it runs up to 6 times a day, low season only 4 times a day. We were definitely nearing the low season as on 3 different outings, (a recommended restaurant, a popular beach and a scenic boat ride), Terri and I were the only people there!
Because of limited tourism there are not many attractions to see. We spent one morning exploring the national park that covers the north end of the island and one afternoon hiking to Odysseus’ Cave, a natural cave that is only accessible by foot or boat. Terri joined me in the water at Odysseus’ Cave and we swam through it despite the water’s relative coolness. Fortunately the Adriatic was relatively calm as climbing up the rocks can be a challenge.
Next stop: Dubrovnik, Croatia ๐ญ๐ท

And another blog post popped up while I was reading the last few! These islands look so cool! I would love the away-from-the-crowd parts. And itโs back to the drawing board for me (well did all the drawing yesterday, painting today.). Working to get 3 done this week plus prep for a class I am teaching in a week). Enjoy Dubrovnik! Xoxo
