Boston, more excitement than we anticipated….

I really didn’t anticipate blogging from our first stop in Boston, we were not seeking adventure here-but it found us!

After a subdued red-eye flight from LAX, we found ourselves on a fog-locked Logan approach. I thought it was unusual when I saw a radio tower rising above the grey-white fog floor that we were slowly descending into. Sure enough, after a couple minutes of nothing but grey fog seen through rain streaked windows, I feel the

Sudden acceleration of full throttle and a severe nose-up attitude. Nothing awakens a plane full of sleep deprived people more than a rapid “go-round” for a second approach.

Yep, there it is, that same radio tower sticking up through the foggy floor again. We descend, Terri asking me the whole time, “Are we OK?” “Sure” I say, all the time knowing it’s best, at this point, to remain positive while tightening my seatbelt and hers.

We land to mild applause on a fog shrouded runway with maybe 1000 feet of visibility…happy to be in Boston.

Before leaving for Boston, I had found a water taxi service that also stores your luggage while you spend your time exploring. As directed, I called the dispatch and asked to be picked-up, “are you kidding?” Came the reply, “I can’t see to the end of the dock, we are not sending a boat to pick you up, we don’t have radar!” They suggested that we make our way to the docks and wait for the fog to clear.

Seems reasonable, but at the docks there is a water taxi…

We hear a voice, “you folks need a water taxi?” Hmmm, “time is a wastin.”

We board, discuss the whole “foggy” situation and the “captain” says “sure, I can get you there, eventually.” We set out across the harbor, a normal 6-7 minute transit becomes a 25 minute low-speed, 900 degrees, yes-at least two complete slow circles in a harbor transited by many fast, radar-equipped (thankfully), ferries. The best line from the captain, ” I need another set of eyes up here!” I guess it’s pretty tough to “google maps” your directions on your phone in the middle of a harbor and steer your boat at the same time.

Needless to say, we made it to Boston and walked the Freedom Trail, and had a fun day. Let the adventures begin!?!

  1. That quick ago around was likely to avoid a collision. Randy encounters it regularly with his 600+ flights a year. At least the drivers are quicker to respond in the air!
