Split, Croatia: a port town with personality

After our long and detoured road-trip from Plitvice, we arrived in Split with our host waiting for us. Our apartment was on the fifth floor and again, no elevator. 90 steps later with our backpacks on we arrived to our space, it needed some furniture updates but had everything we want plus a great view of the harbor.

We were close to old town which always has the old Palace, church and statues of the important historical figures. The weather was still not good, windy with rain, but we ventured out anyway. Terri had read about one of the statues located next to old Palace, a huge 50+ foot bronze of some long-haired bishop/philosopher wearing sandals. According to legend, you must make a wish and rub his toes that show through his sandals. Terri told me to “wish for better weather,” I think we both did as the next day was very nice. Teri was so happy she drug me by the statue for another wish, and I complied: same statue, same toes, same wish.

Since Terri had had her hair touch-up, I was hearing more and more how bad my un -trimmed goatee, eyebrows, ear hair, etc were looking, ( no room for man-scaping tools in the backpack!). I think her last wish at “shiney-toes” was for me to relent and find a barber-I did. All went well until the barber cut his fingers while cutting my hair, maybe all the grey threw him off. Terri was thrilled with my cut, trim, deburring and oiling, I felt pretty good too!

Our friends, Thorv and Mary-Lou, are traveling through the same area and we had decided to get together whenever our paths actually crossed and this was our first chance. We decided to meet at a highly recommended restaurant but found it too busy to get a table, but just down the street, we found a very cute restaurant that would fit us in. The only thing I remember having was some of the two 1 liter bottles of local white wine. I remember liking the meal, just not exactly what I ate.

Next stop: the island of Hvar
